Motorcycle Modification Law in Bangladesh

Most people in Bangladesh are more enthusiastic about just buying and riding bikes. But they often forget that simply learning to drive and using a bike as they wish is not permitted.

To prevent carelessness and accidents while riding motorcycles, it is very important to follow certain laws and rules in Bangladesh. The same applies to bike modifications.

The Road Transport Act 2018 of Bangladesh has introduced new restrictions regarding bike modification, such as changing parts or customizing bikes with different accessories. If you violate these rules without being aware, you may face punishment under the law.

Let’s take a look at the sections of the law that you must know before modifying your bike.

Bangladesh Road Transport Act 2018

The Bangladesh Road Transport Act 2018 replaced the old Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1983. This new law was introduced to address modern-day issues regarding vehicles.

Bike modification is one of the most important topics under this law. Over the years, motorcycle modification has become an industry in Bangladesh and its popularity continues to grow.

However, many people add modifications without considering safety, which can lead to accidents and risks for both riders and others. This law exists to create awareness about such issues.

Bike Modification

Any kind of change from the condition in which the bike was purchased is considered bike modification. From adding stickers to changing seats, engines, lights, body parts, or any other components — all fall under modification.

If you want to change any part of your bike, you must follow the technical specifications recorded by BRTA while modifying.

If the law is violated, you may face a minimum of one year in prison, up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 300,000 BDT, or both.

So, you can modify your bike as you like only by knowing and following the technical specifications of BRTA. Otherwise, illegal modifications may bring punishment.

It is also important to note that without valid bike registration, no modifications or changes are allowed.

Bike Modification Law by BRTA’s Road Transport Act 2018

Now let’s look at the rules and specifications mentioned in BRTA’s Road Transport Act 2018.

The new law of 2018 prohibits changes to several technical specifications of motorcycles.

There are detailed guidelines on whether you can change aspects like the bike’s length, width, height, seat number, wheelbase, wheel size and position, indicator lights, brakes, gears, exhaust, and emission system.

However, some core aspects of the bike cannot be changed. But you may apply under BRTA’s conditions to make certain internal and external modifications.

Notably, the technical specifications listed during registration allow you to replace or change those parts without any additional permission.

For example, the default headlight provided by the manufacturer is usually halogen. You may replace it with LED lights without issue. You may also change the color of the small DRL lights beside the headlight and replace the visor plate above the headlight if properly fitted.

What Modifications Are Allowed (According to Bike Modification Law)

Keep in mind, however, that replacing the entire bike head with another model’s head is completely illegal under the 2018 law.

Mudguard

You may change the mudguard of your bike if you wish. Painting the rim bars or installing wider tires (if supported by your rim) is also allowed.

Handle

Many riders interested in stunts may consider changing the handlebar. In that case, caution is important. You may switch between 3D handlebars and pipe handlebars with the help of skilled mechanics.

Rearview Mirror

Changing the shape or size of rearview mirrors is not restricted. However, you must not ride without rearview mirrors.

Some engines come with adjustable plates. You may replace or remove these plates from authorized showrooms if needed. This is considered a permissible modification.

Bumper

You may replace your bike’s bumper. There are no restrictions on changing or removing the bumper.

If your bike doesn’t have an engine cowl or guard but has the option, you may install one for protection or aesthetics. If it already has one, you may also remove it if you prefer.

Seat

You may replace your bike seat. Changing a two-piece seat into a single-piece seat is also allowed if it fits properly.

Foot Peg

The rubber covers on foot pegs can be replaced without restriction.

Suspension

You may replace the front suspension from downside-up to upside-down or vice versa at authorized workshops. Converting rear dual suspension into a single suspension is not prohibited, but it is costly.

Silencer

Using silencers of the same model or those with lower noise levels is allowed.

Tail Light Plates and Rear Handle

You may replace the plates near the tail light and also change the rear handle to a round or bar handle without legal issues.
