Café Racer Bikes Available in the Market
There are various types of bikes in Bangladesh, and currently, commuter and sports bikes are very popular. However, for different preferences, designs, and exceptional looks, some bikes are available in the Bangladeshi market, and a cafe racer is one such bike. Cafe racers are a kind of fascination among youngsters. Only a few customers buy this type of bike, but its market is growing day by day in the country. Therefore, there is also a market for dirt and cafe racers in Bangladesh. These types of motorcycles are usually used for quick travel over short distances.
Cafe racer bikes can be defined as bikes that are lightweight, can achieve top speed very quickly, and can be used for travel anywhere in the shortest possible time. Cafe racers are a type of light and powerful motorcycle, designed with necessary modifications for speed and easy handling rather than comfort. Cafe racers gained popularity quickly due to their visual minimalism. They feature low-mounted handlebars, custom seat cowlings, and high-capacity fuel tanks.
History of Cafe Racers
The cafe racer sub-culture originated in England in the 1950s. These bikes are a type of sport motorcycle that was gaining popularity among young people in London in the early 1960s. By the 1960s, these motorcycles became a symbol of prestige in England. Around this time, young people of the Rock n' Roll culture began to modify the design and engines of their traditional bikes. Youngsters took this sub-culture to another level. They made traditional motorcycles faster and more fashionable, creating the 'Cafe Racer'.
After World War II, bikes became quite accessible in England. Most families could afford four-wheel cars, and young members of the family would also buy a motorcycle. Motorcycles were not just a means of transport for low-income individuals; they became a symbol of speed and status for people of all incomes. At that time, bikers would modify their bikes into cafe racers, optimizing them for speed and handling for quick rides over short distances. It was like a revolution against conventional culture.
Cafe racer bikes have since become popular worldwide, with some manufacturers producing models in their factories. Even today, due to the high global demand for these types of bikes, manufacturing companies have not lost interest. Famous bike manufacturers like Benelli, BMW, Derby, etc., still bring cafe racer versions of their regular models to the market, a practice that continues to this day.
Current Design
Typically, when designing these types of bikes, companies are seen to emulate the models of Grand Prix motorcycle road race bikes from the early 1960s, which had some common characteristics: visual minimalism (the fewer body parts, the better); low-mounted handlebars; the use of seat cowlings; long and flat-type fuel tanks; knee grips on the fuel tank for knee fit; and so on.
These characteristics are also seen in modern cafe racer bikes. In addition to their unique designs, the engines of these bikes are tuned to achieve maximum speed in a short time and maintain good control at high speeds.
Cafe racers were born as modified short-distance racing machines. In the 70s, there was a frenzy of modifications among bikers in Europe. Teenagers and young bikers of that era started creating CAFÉ RACER style bikes by using new shaped seats, low handlebars, and small fairings around the headlights on their low displacement (low CC) bikes.
In Bangladesh, the cafe racer concept is still largely in a modified stage. Most of the bikes of this style seen on the roads are created by modifying YAMAHA RX-100, SUZUKI AX 100, HONDA CG 125, and similar 100 and 125 CC bikes. Since the CC limit for bikes in Bangladesh is only 160 CC, original higher CC bikes are not available in Bangladesh. Importing or modifying bikes with speeds above 160 CC is illegal and unlawful in our country.
