Why You Should Consider Buying an Electric Bike

Fuel is not infinite. Over-reliance on fuel prevents a country's economy from becoming self-reliant. The use of electricity is increasing to reduce pressure on fuel. In many developed countries, the use of electricity in all sectors, instead of fuel, began long ago. The number of electric vehicles in communication is increasing day by day. Scientists are constantly working to further develop electric vehicles. New things are being discovered with time, and these discoveries are making our lives more comfortable. In this unstable time of fuel, the necessity of electric vehicles is being felt in all areas. People's interest in electric bikes is increasing due to the needs of life and livelihood. Diesel, octane, and petrol are used as fuel for various vehicles including bikes. These are very harmful to the environment. The smoke emitted from these fuels is damaging the Earth's ozone layer, increasing the amount of carbon monoxide in the air. As a result, ultraviolet rays are reaching the Earth, and thus the Earth is getting hotter. Therefore, the indiscriminate use of fuel must be reduced, and the use of renewable energy must be increased. Currently, fuel-powered bikes are very popular, and people's attraction to e-bikes is also growing. Primarily, people's interest in e-bikes is increasing due to benefits such as saving fuel costs, being completely eco-friendly, and being a good vehicle for short distances. In the wake of rising fuel prices, the demand for electric bikes in the country is increasing. Electric bikes are quite affordable and eco-friendly, so the demand for this type of bike will continue to grow in the future. Motorcycles are one of our most important means of communication. They have made our lives easier. For future fuel savings, environmental and economic balance, electric motorcycles can be an ideal vehicle for us. In communication, household chores, workplaces, and almost all needs, the use of electricity as fuel is increasing. Electric vehicles have gained a lot of popularity in developed countries. Popular brands are manufacturing and marketing such motorcycles and cars. It is hoped that the production and marketing of e-bikes will also increase in our country.
What is an Electric Bike?
The main difference between a motorcycle and an e-bike is that a motorbike runs on fuel, while an e-bike runs on electricity. These bikes have a rechargeable battery, and an electric motor is set with this battery. After the battery is charged with electricity, when the motor is started, the battery provides power to the engine inside the motor. In contrast, a motorbike generates this power in the engine by burning fuel or gasoline. An e-bike does not require any fuel. You just need to charge the bike, which usually takes about 8 hours for a full charge. A typical electric motorcycle of this kind can travel 70-80 km on a single charge. Heavier bikes usually go 50-60 km. So, as you can see, these bikes are very economical for short distances. People in urban areas of our country and commuters need fast communication over short distances. These bikes would be very good for them. The price of electric bikes in Bangladesh is also within reach.
Why Buy an Electric Motorcycle?
Considering the economic condition of our country, the potential for the e-bike market is significant. There are many working men and women in the country. They lose valuable working hours in traffic jams. For short distances, avoiding traffic and saving transportation costs, they can use these types of motorcycles as commuters. Small business owners and general people can all use these bikes as regular commuters. This is because the price and maintenance cost of electric bikes are within everyone's reach. These bikes are generally good for daily rides of 40-50 km, and they will provide service for a long time. They usually travel 60-80 km effortlessly on a single charge. Most bikes in the country range from 50cc to 110cc. Almost all of them are used for work, meaning they are commuter bikes. Most of our bikers consider fuel efficiency when riding. Since electric bikes are quite low cost, we can all consider them as a daily means of communication. These bikes are suitable for normal roads and will provide service for a long time if properly maintained. However, it must be remembered that these bikes are not suitable for long journeys. They are also not suitable for highway roads. For short distances, they are very profitable. Especially for those who go out for quick errands over short distances, these bikes can be an ideal vehicle. Now, all developed countries are increasing the use of alternative energy sources. They are trying to provide environmentally friendly fuel. New energy sources are being discovered or improved. The multidimensional use of electric power is a prime example of this. The extensive use of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel, and octane is excessively increasing carbon emissions. This is causing serious damage to the ozone layer and the environment. Considering these situations, the use of such motorcycles is very beneficial for the environment. Railways, cars, and buses are running on electric power. Electric vehicles are becoming popular day by day. As an alternative to fuel, the use of electric motors is increasing. With increasing popularity, the electric motorcycle market is catching up, and modern motorcycles are coming to the market. Bangladesh's e-motorcycle market is still in its initial stages. Despite considerable popularity, e-motorcycles are still not easily available in our country due to several reasons. Now we will discuss some attractive aspects of electric bikes that will encourage you to buy an electric motorcycle.
Some Benefits of Using Electric Motorcycles
(1) Considering the fuel cost of fuel-powered bikes, the fuel cost of e-bikes is almost negligible. You don't have to calculate and fill up fuel in this bike. Here you only have to bear the cost of electricity. You can reduce this electricity cost if you can charge with solar panels, then you won't need to take electricity from the grid line.
(2) The biggest benefit of electric bikes is that they are eco-friendly. These bikes do not burn fuel, so no smoke is produced, and thus no harm is done to the environment. The horn's decibel level is also very low, so it does not cause noise pollution. It is convenient to control, making these bikes very safe to ride.
(3) E-bike maintenance is very easy. Maintenance costs are very low. The battery needs to be changed every 2 to 3 years. If charged correctly and ridden according to guidelines, servicing is required only after long intervals. Other parts are readily available, and their prices are also within reach.
(4) The repair or servicing cost of fuel-powered bikes is very high, and it needs to be done regularly. You can perform basic servicing of an e-bike yourself. You will only need to go for servicing if there is a major fault or damage. You just need to ensure that the bike's brakes are working properly, and the pads and tires are in good condition.
(5) E-bikes are very easy to control. There's no need to change gears, no worries about holding the clutch, no need to check oil-mobil; you can control the bike just with the brakes. Therefore, women and elderly riders can easily handle these bikes. These bikes are easy and safe to ride.
(6) The price of a standard e-bike is less than that of a mid-range fuel-powered bike. However, high-quality bikes are now being produced and imported. So, considering the quality, the price is proportionate. E-bikes have fewer parts, so their price is not higher than regular bikes. In the last section of this blog, you will be given an idea about the price of electric bikes.
Some Disadvantages of Using Electric Motorcycles
(1) The reason why e-bikes are not very common in Bangladesh is the lack of approval from the BRTA (Bangladesh Road Transport Authority) for these bikes. Due to the lack of approval, good quality bikes are not imported. Some 50cc e-bikes are seen on the roads because they don't require a license. The absence of authorized service centers and good quality spare parts for these bikes means their acceptance among people is still low. Essentially, these bikes are still not allowed to be ridden on highways.
(2) E-bikes have gained popularity worldwide. The reason they are not yet properly popular in our country is that the e-bikes available here are either like bicycles or light scooters. They cannot be properly called electric bikes. Therefore, the existing e-bikes are not preferred by bikers. If good quality, standard e-motorcycles are assembled or imported, interest among people will be generated.
(3) These types of motorcycles need to be charged regularly, and charging takes a considerable amount of time. There are almost no proper charging booths or ports for these bikes in our country. This also leads to higher electricity costs. If the motor is not charged properly, you won't get proper mileage. The battery condition will also deteriorate. This problem will continue to increase as the bike gets older.
(4) If the bike is not of standard quality and not properly maintained, the battery needs to be changed every 2-3 years, which incurs significant costs. Furthermore, the batteries available in the domestic market are of low quality. This situation exists precisely because there are no authorized service centers for electric bikes. Bikers lose interest in e-motorcycles due to these concerns.
(5) E-bikes have charge limitations, so you cannot go more than 60-80 km, or 100 km for a standard bike. In fuel-powered bikes, you can start after refueling, but with these bikes, you must ensure a full charge.
(6) Another reason for the lack of popularity of these motorcycles is their lack of speed. These bikes are not suitable for highway roads. You can use these bikes for city rides.
(7) Electric bikes have almost no resale value. This is another reason for their lack of popularity.
However, considering all aspects, such as the price of electric bikes, cost-effectiveness, safety, ease of riding, and suitability for communication in congested areas, using e-bikes is very beneficial. As conscious citizens, we must also keep in mind that e-bikes are completely eco-friendly. Ultimately, to save fuel resources, we must move towards electric or other power-driven bikes and vehicles. E-motorcycles are easy to ride, facilitate communication, are eco-friendly, and cost-effective, yet there are some things these bikes cannot offer. Low speed and inability to do long rides are primarily the two main reasons. High-quality e-bikes are available in Germany and some European countries. To save fuel resources, people in our country need to increase their interest in electric vehicles. Without approval and servicing centers for electric bikes, this sector will never advance.
Registration and Driving License for Electric Motorcycles
In Bangladesh, these bikes do not require a license because the bikes that run on the roads are generally within the 50-75cc limit. There is no license mandate for low-cc limit bikes. Also, higher cc variants of these bikes are not approved in our country. Therefore, there is no concern regarding registration either. Various large companies in our neighboring country, India, have introduced good quality e-bikes to the market. For example, companies like Honda, Yamaha, Ola, Bajaj, and Okinawa are capturing the market and becoming popular. These bikes can cover more than 100 km on a single charge. If these bikes receive approval in our country, then registration, insurance, and licenses will definitely be required.
