How to Get a BRTA Driving License in 2022

A driving license is a type of identification document that describes the driver's identity. It is a very important document for adult drivers operating various types of motor vehicles. Section 3 of the Bangladesh Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1983 states that no person shall drive a vehicle on the road without a driving license. So, if you want to drive yourself anywhere, you will definitely need a driving license. Let's learn about the process of how you can obtain a BRTA driving license.

Minimum Qualifications to Obtain a Driving License in Bangladesh

Any physically and mentally fit Bangladeshi citizen can apply for a BRTA driving license. However, there are some conditions. For example-

• For applying for a driving license, a minimum of 8th grade pass is required. However, for online applications, the minimum educational qualification must be S.S.C.
• The first and essential condition for obtaining a license is to get a learner's driving license.
• For non-professional drivers, the minimum age for application is 18, and for professional drivers, the minimum age is 20.

Three types of professional motor driving licenses are available-

1. For Light Motor Vehicles (below 2500 kg): This license is required for driving vehicles weighing less than 2500 kg (motorcycles, CNG auto-rickshaws, private cars, microbuses, etc.). The minimum age limit to obtain this license is 20 years.

2. For Medium-sized Motor Vehicles (between 2500 kg - 6000 kg): The minimum age limit to obtain this license is 23 years, provided that the applicant must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in driving light motor vehicles.

3. For Heavy Motor Vehicles (6000 kg or more): The minimum age limit for driving heavy motor vehicles or obtaining a heavy driving license is 26 years, provided that the applicant must have previously held a medium driving license and have 3 years of experience.

Rules for Online Driving License Application and Required Documents

For Learner's Driving License:

It is advisable to scan the following documents before applying. This will be convenient for online applications.

1. Photo: The photo size should be 300*300 pixels and a maximum of 150 KB.

2. Scanned copy of a medical certificate signed by a registered doctor. The scanned copy size should not exceed 600 KB.

3. Scanned copy of National ID card or Birth Registration or Passport. The scanned copy size should not exceed 600 KB.

4. Copy of gas, electricity, or water bill of the current address (not exceeding 600 KB).

Process to obtain BRTA Smart Card Motor Driving License:

The same documents will be required in this case. The only exception is that you will need to provide the number of your learner's driving license, which will be issued to you after passing the learner's driving test.

Application Procedure for BRTA Bangladesh Motor Driving License:

First, the applicant must register with their NID at the BRTA window service. The information provided in the NID must be filled in the application form accordingly. You will select your preferred test center, date, and time. Then comes the payment of the license fee. You will receive a learner's driving license immediately upon payment of the fee. You can use it until the driving license test.

How to get a BRTA Smart Card Driving License:

After the written, oral, and practical tests, you will be provided with a learner's driving license number. Using this number, you can apply for a smart driving license online by submitting the required documents and fees. After that, the applicant will select their preferred time and visit the BRTA office to provide photos, signatures, and fingerprints. Once registered in the biometric system, you will receive an SMS informing you of the date to collect your smart card driving license.

What to do for an International Driving License?

To obtain permission to drive outside the country, you must get an International Driving License from the Automobile Association of Bangladesh (AAB). The necessary steps to obtain an International Driving License are-

• First, you must obtain a smart card driving license.
• Then, you need to fill out the application form from the BRTA's official website with information similar to that provided on your smart card. The documents required along with it are-

1. Attested photocopy of the smart card driving license.

2. One passport-sized photo and four stamp-sized photos.

3. Photocopy of the first four pages of the passport.

After providing the necessary information and documents, the application form must be submitted to the AAB office.

Fees for Driving License:

Learner's License Fee

1. If you want to get a license for either a motorcycle or a light vehicle, it will cost 345 BDT.

2. For a combined license for both a motorcycle and a light vehicle, it will cost 518 BDT.

Smart Card Driving License Fee

1. The fee for a 5-year professional driving license is 1680 BDT.

2. The fee for a 10-year non-professional driving license is 2542 BDT.

International Driving License Fee

The fee for an International Driving License is 2500 BDT.
