How to Obtain and Renew a Car Driving License in Bangladesh

What is a Driving License?
A driving license is a permit issued by the government. Generally, it is given after passing a driving test. Now we will discuss the necessity of a driving license and how to obtain one.
Necessity of Driving License in Bangladesh
Driving licenses are issued by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). BRTA offices are located in 32 districts out of 64 administrative circles. A driving license is very important for a driver. Because it is not just a piece of paper. It is the government's permission to drive a motor vehicle on the road. If you do not have a driving license, you cannot drive any motor vehicle. Driving without a license is a crime. If you drive without a license, the Bangladesh Police can arrest you.
How to Obtain a License?
First, you must apply to the BRTA authority for a learner's license. Then you can apply for the main license. To get a driving license, you need to submit some documents.
Documents Required for a Driving License-
- Photo: The photo size must be 300*300 pixels and a maximum of 150 KB.
- Scanned copy of a medical certificate signed by a registered doctor. The scanned copy size should not exceed 600 KB.
- Scanned copy of National ID card or birth registration or passport. The scanned copy size must not exceed 600 KB.
- Copy of gas, electricity, or water bill of the current address (not exceeding 600 KB).
- Fee for Motorcycle Driving License is 345 BDT, and for Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Driving License is 518 BDT.
After obtaining a general driving license, you can apply for a smart card driving license if you wish. If you want a smart card driving license, you will also need to submit some important documents.
- First, you need to go to the BRTA office for a smart card driving license.
- Scanned copy of National ID card or birth registration or passport.
- Scanned copy of a medical certificate signed by a registered doctor.
- 5 recently taken passport-sized photos.
Additionally, a 5-year professional smart card driving license costs 1680 BDT, and a 3-year non-professional license costs 2542 BDT.
Driving License Renewal Process
There are two types of driving licenses. One is a professional driving license, and the other is a non-professional driving license. A professional driving license is required for those who want to take driving as a profession, and a non-professional driving license is for hobby drivers or those who like to drive their own vehicles.
For Learner's License
For renewal of learner's licenses, the prescribed fee must be paid. If applying 15 days before the license expires, 2185 BDT must be submitted, and if applying after expiry, 2385 BDT must be submitted. Once the required documents are submitted and approved by BRTA, the applicant's biometric registration will be completed immediately. You will be notified via SMS as soon as your license is ready for collection.
For Professional License
For professional license renewal, you must first pass a practical test. After passing, you must apply for the license with the prescribed documents. If applying 15 days before the license expires, 1323 BDT must be submitted, and if applying after expiry, 1523 BDT must be submitted. If all your documents are in order, your biometric registration will be completed immediately. You will be notified via SMS as soon as your license card is ready.
