The experience of riding a motorcycle largely depends on its tires. Tires not only provide speed but are also an essential part of safety and a comfortable ride. Choosing the right motorcycle tire makes your biking experience even more enjoyable. Different types of tires are suitable for various situations and purposes. In this article, we will learn about the different types of motorcycle tires, their structure, and how to take care of them-

Motorcycle Wheel Structure

To understand motorcycle tires, you first need to know about their structure and how they work. A motorcycle tire's structure has 4 parts:

  • Sidewall
  • Tread
  • Bead
  • Radial

Each of these parts works together to keep the wheel moving. The sidewall is the outer covering of the tire that we see from the outside. If the tire does not have enough air, i.e., it is deflated, the sidewall easily bends. But if the tire has enough air, the sidewall is capable of bearing the entire weight of the motorbike. The tread is the part of the tire that directly contacts the ground. Tread can vary greatly in shape and design. Maintaining traction on the road and preserving the tire's qualities depend on the tread. The bead is a rubber and metal ring inside the tire that holds it to the rim and contains the air. Finally, radial steel wires help maintain the tire's rigidity.

Different Types of Tires

Depending on the use of the motorcycle, the type of motorcycle tire can also vary. Now we will discuss some common types:

  • Sport Tires

Sport tires are used to ensure high performance in cornering and on motorbikes. They are much lighter in weight than other types of tires. Since they are used for cornering, their side structures have a good curve.

  • Touring Tires

Touring tires are most effective for long rides on sports bikes. They can maintain traction on highways while also providing long mileage. These tires are quite sturdy in construction, and their treads are cut for better grip.

  • Dual Sport Tires

Dual sport or adventure tires are for those who enjoy off-road riding with their bikes. These tires are primarily seen on dirt bikes. They assist more in riding bikes on hilly, muddy, or dirt roads compared to main roads.

Use of Tubeless Tires

A new addition to the motorcycle tire market today is tubeless tires. Due to the superior qualities of tubeless tires compared to conventional tube tires, their demand among bikers has increased significantly. Conventional tube tires have a tube inside to hold air, which, when inflated, maintains the tire's structure. However, tubeless tires do not have such a tube. Instead, a liner is used to seal the tire to the rim.

Advantages of Tubeless Tires

  • Tubeless tires are less prone to punctures. Even if something gets stuck in the tire, the air can be easily contained due to the absence of a tube.
  • Tubeless tires can operate at lower pressures compared to tube tires, which require high pressure for proper bike operation.
  • If a tubeless tire gets punctured for any reason, the puncture can be easily sealed with a liquid sealant.
  • Tubeless tires are also quite light in weight, allowing for comfortable riding.
  • Tubeless tires offer greater stability compared to other tires.

How to Take Care of Tires

To get optimal performance and ensure your safety, it's crucial to regularly take care of your motorcycle tires. By following a few specific rules, you can easily maintain your tires:

  • Regularly Check Your Tires

Before taking out your bike, check if there are any punctures or damage to the tires. If you notice any unexpected cuts, tears, or cracks, it's essential to change the tire.

  • Control Tire Pressure

Never put excessive pressure in your bike tires, as this can lead to the risk of bursting. Also, don't keep the pressure too low, as it can cause the tire's structure to deform.

  • Check Tire Tread

Tire treads wear down over time. Therefore, regularly check the condition of your treads. When you see that the tread is barely visible or has merged with the tire's body, make arrangements to replace the tire immediately.

  • Avoid Overloading

Overloading your bike will impact tire performance. To ensure tire performance and longevity, avoid riding with excessive load.

  • Use Tires Appropriate for the Situation

Choose tires based on your riding habits and the conditions in which you are riding. Just as adventure tires are not suitable for highway riding, sport tires will not be effective for off-road driving.

By following these guidelines, you can easily ensure the longevity of your motorcycle tires, as well as proper bike performance and your safety.
