Registering a motorcycle in Bangladesh is not as simple as it seems. The registration process is usually somewhat complex. If you are not aware of the rules and requirements, you may face difficulties. In this article, we will guide you through the motorcycle registration process so you can easily buy and register your own bike.

The registration process varies depending on the type of motorcycle. Generally, the registration procedure is similar to car registration. For two-wheelers, the process is based on the type of motorcycle. As proof of ownership, you must present the original purchase receipt and other related documents at the BRTA office.

Rules for Motorcycle Registration

First, you need to register your bike at the local police station. In some districts like Dhaka, you may be required to pay a specific fee before registration approval. If there is no police station nearby, you can visit the district administration office or another government office handling vehicle registrations.

Documents Required for Motorcycle Registration

  • Duly filled and signed application form (H-form), attested by the owner and importer/dealer.
  • Relevant documents in case of hire purchase agreements with a bank or financial institution.
  • Signatures of both owners in case of joint ownership, or seal and signature for company ownership.
  • Attested copy of the Bill of Lading.
  • Original import invoice.
  • Sale intimation.
  • Import permit (attested by the bank).
  • Packing list.
  • Sales certificate.
  • Delivery challan, etc.

Motorcycle Registration Process

The first step for the owner is to fill out the BRTA-issued application form along with all required documents. After submission, BRTA verifies the documents. Once verified, the registration fee is assessed and an assessment slip is provided.

After paying the registration fee, the owner must present the motorcycle at the BRTA office for inspection.

Once inspection is complete, the Assistant Director approves the registration and issues a registration number, fitness certificate, and tax token with official signatures.

Within 7–15 days of registration confirmation, owners must provide their biometrics (digital photo, digital signature, and fingerprints) at the designated BRTA office to receive the Digital Registration Certificate (DRC). Notifications are sent via SMS for both biometric collection and certificate readiness.

Additional Steps and Documents for Registration

1. Application form with importer or dealer’s signature.

2. Two recent passport-size photos of the owner.

3. Entry bill, invoice, LCA copy (if applicable).

4. Sale certificate or proof of sale from importer/dealer.

5. Packing list, delivery papers, and gate pass.

6. VAT payment documents (if applicable).

7. Payment voucher for applicable registration fee.

8. Work permit and visa copy for foreign owners.

9. VAT payment slip attested by Customs office.

10. Manufacturer’s approved design/specifications as required by BRTA (for all vehicles).

11. Attested copy of NID/passport/digital driving license for individuals; application letter for companies or corporations.

12. Auction release papers with production details if purchased from an auction.

13. All original papers provided by the motorcycle company and BRTA inspector’s report.

14. NOC from Customs/NBR (if applicable).

15. Non-judicial affidavit on a Tk. 50 stamp for 125cc–155cc motorcycles (sample available on BRTA website).

These steps are essential for proper motorcycle registration. Registering ensures your bike’s security and allows you to ride legally.

Motorcycle Registration Form

Before learning about registration fees, you must understand the registration form. Once all required documents are collected, you can obtain the registration form from the BRTA website or office. Attach all necessary documents with the form.

Since this is your application for motorcycle registration, double-check everything before submission. Even small mistakes can cause delays. After completing the form, visit the BRTA office to verify your application.

If approved, you will be asked to pay the registration fee and receive an assessment slip (money deposit slip). This slip requires your personal and bike details, including purchase price. Make sure to get official seals and signatures after completion.

Motorcycle Registration Fees 2022

Motorcycle registration fees are charged based on registration number categories. The process is regulated under the Motorbike (Third Party Insurance) Act 1992, passed by the Parliament of Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, the process can vary by BRTA zone and is often complicated. Road permits are categorized based on engine capacity (50cc–155cc):

Category 1 (10 years registration): 50–80cc fee – 13,913 BDT; 100cc fee – 19,623 BDT; 150cc fee – 21,273 BDT.

Category 2 (2 years registration): 50–80cc fee – 9,313 BDT; 100cc fee – 10,463 BDT; 101–150cc fee – 12,073 BDT.

Motorcycle Registration Certificate

After depositing fees, submit all documents at BRTA. The inspection officer will verify your bike and documents, and issue a verification slip along with registration number, fitness certificate, and tax token. These allow you to legally ride anywhere in Bangladesh.

Next, you will be called for biometric registration. After biometric data is collected, registration will be finalized. Once completed, you will receive an SMS and can collect your number plate within a month.

How to Verify Motorcycle Registration

You can easily verify motorcycle registration via SMS.

Type: DL <space> Reference Number and send to 26969. You will receive a reply confirming registration status.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Motorcycle Registration

Registration provides official proof of ownership, records vehicle details, and ensures legal compliance. Without registration, it means VAT has not been paid, and your bike becomes illegal. This can lead to fines, confiscation of the bike, or prohibition from road use. Therefore, registration is crucial.

Renewing Motorcycle Registration

Registrations are valid for a specific period and must be renewed after expiry. To renew, pay the renewal fee at a designated bank and reissue previous documents. A new tax token will then be issued by BRTA.

Conclusion

Motorcycle registration is a vital process for every bike owner in Bangladesh. Without it, you cannot ride legally. The government has taken steps to ensure road safety by requiring registration and licensing. Though the process may seem difficult, patience and proper preparation make it possible. Collect all documents and register your motorcycle for a safe and legal ride.
