A lane is a section of road marked with different signs. In lane-marked sections, cars and other vehicles must follow certain rules, which apply to each lane. Cars, rickshaws, bikes, buses, and pedestrians all move on the same road in Bangladesh, so traffic congestion is a daily problem. Following specific lane rules can greatly reduce traffic congestion and chaos.

Driving rules, traffic regulations, and lane rules may vary from country to country. Bangladesh also has its own rules and regulations in these matters. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has imposed several laws and regulations for road safety and effective traffic management. Knowing these rules is necessary to ensure road safety. Violations of these lane and traffic regulations are punishable by fines and even suspension of driving license.

While driving on the road, we need to follow certain rules, one of which is traffic rules and lane keeping. Adhering to lane rules not only controls traffic congestion and chaos but also greatly reduces the chances of accidents. This article discusses the lane rules for cars in Bangladesh in detail.

Lane Rules for Cars in Bangladesh

  1. Understand the difference and measurement of right and left lanes. In Bangladesh, vehicles drive on the left, and slower/heavy vehicles (e.g., trucks) should keep to the left lane.
  2. Be aware of different lane markings such as white or yellow lines, direction signs, parallel, cross, or broken lines. You must not overtake or change lanes across parallel (solid) lines. Overtaking is allowed where there is a broken line.
  3. If there is more than one lane in the same direction, use the appropriate lane according to vehicle size and speed. Heavy vehicles should use the left lane and lighter/faster vehicles the right lane.
  4. Always use signals when changing lanes. To overtake, move to the right lane, then return to your original lane after safely passing. Use the correct turn signals when turning left or right so vehicles behind understand your intent.
  5. Some lanes are designated for certain vehicles—such as ambulances, rickshaws/cycles, or emergency lanes. General vehicles are prohibited from entering these lanes.
  6. Overtake from the right side and turn on the indicator. When you hear a siren, move safely to the right side to allow passage, then return to your designated lane.

Lane Use Control Signals

  • Downward Green Arrow – You may drive in the lane beneath the signal.
  • Yellow X – Prepare to vacate the lane beneath the signal.
  • Red X – Do not use the lane beneath the signal.

A Few More Things to Note

  1. Pedestrians should slow down and be cautious at crossings and must obey traffic signals.
  2. Do not use the horn unnecessarily. Use it only for safety and to alert surrounding vehicles.
  3. Use indicators when changing lanes or turning to help other drivers anticipate your movement.
  4. Observe speed limit signs and drive within the limit. Pay attention to speed breakers and sharp turn warnings.
  5. Do not park on footpaths, in no-parking zones, or anywhere that may cause traffic congestion.

Finally, Bangladesh has a high rate of road accidents, so everyone should obey traffic and lane rules. Driving according to lane rules is important not only for your own safety but also for the safety of others. Stricter enforcement can help ensure compliance and make roads safer for all.
